Our guide development program is one of the most important components of Wild Diversity's mission. We want our community to have a sense of place in the outdoors, one where they can grow, share their experiences and thrive.

Emerging Guides

Wild Diversity's Leadership Pathway is coming in 2025!

Welcome to a program like no other! Our Emerging Guides program is designed to be your compass on an extraordinary journey, offering exclusive opportunities for BIPOC, Queer, and Trans individuals seeking to acquire the skill of outdoor guiding.

At the heart of our program lies a visionary goal: to elevate opportunities and amplify the visibility of the vibrant Wild Diversity communities. We're not just providing skills; we're forging a path of change and inspiration.

Our 2025 program will run from May to August. Participants will be provided with adventure training, and hands-on adventure skills development, and learn alongside our field guides as they facilitate community adventures. 

Emerging Guides program includes:

  • Camping 

  • Backpacking 

  • Paddling Adventure

  • Youth Education

  • Conservation

  • Adventure Guide Development Intensive

  • Adventure Logistics

  • De-escalation Training

  • Mental Health First Aid Training

  • Wilderness First Aid Training

  2. Some firsthand experience in outdoor adventures to share your enthusiasm and knowledge with others.

  3. A natural ability to self-direct, stay motivated, and inspire others within the Wild Diversity community.

  4. Adaptability and a keen ability to learn and thrive in an active and ever-changing environment.

  5. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and decision-making skills, making you a valuable team member and educator.

  6. A knack for working seamlessly in diverse environments, including various weather conditions and backcountry settings.

  7. Full Availability for the Whole Duration of the Program: We understand that life can be unpredictable, and exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis to accommodate your needs.

Location

This program takes place out of Portland, Oregon. Participants will need to be able to make it to Wild Diversity regularly as a part of this program.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Must self-identify as either Black, Indigenous, a Person of Color (BIPOC), Queer or Trans

  • Must have flexibility for day, evening and weekend adventures, training and workshops.. Upon successful completion of training, Wild Diversity will finalize your course schedule for the season based on your skills assessment. Emerging Guides can expect to work

    • Twice a week at Wild Diversity's office days and evenings.

    • Two evening shifts over the course of the program

    • Three weekend adventures over the course of the program

    • Must be able to participant for the full training days

Our Guides play a big role in Wild Diversity's engagement with our community. Their expertise guides participants through wild spaces creates a container for our community to discover their own connection with the outdoors.
